Lexus is newest automobile maker to take the step into automatic driving. The company has given an announcement saying their “Highway Teammate” advanced driver assist system (ADAS) will be present for consumers in the year of 2020. This is on the heels of that spectacular LS+ concept that Lexus unveiled at the Tokyo Auto Show this month.
Information on the Lexus Highway Teammate System
The framework from the company will give automatic driving from the entrance to the exit on automobile only roads. The company further states that the system will “enable automated merging, lane changes and diverging, as well as keep a vehicle in its lane and maintain vehicle-to-vehicle distance,”.
Lexus did not give information on what type of sensors and cameras it will be making use of. This means we will not know about the restrictions present in Highway Teammate. This is, of course, until the company reveals more on the topic. Presently, all advanced driver assist systems need some kind of input from the driver and certain ADAS can be used only on some roadways. The automaker has said that they will combine connected-car technology and AI to make sure that the automatic driving is safe.
The competition Lexus" faces
Once Highway Teammate releases, Lexus will face competition with a huge number of automakers. These include Tesla, Cadillac, Audi, Nissan, Mercedes-Benz among many others. Furthermore, most of these automakers have quite a lead in the section. It will take Lexus a lot of effort to catch up to them.
Conflict with the other automatic driving systems from Toyota
For those who do not know, Lexus is handled by Toyota. Toyota is developing two other automatic driving systems. They are called Chauffeur and Guardian. It is not clear on how similar the three systems will be. We don"t know if they will be borrowing features from each other.
