Apple Removes Apps from China Store That Help Internet Users Evade Censorship

The crackdown of the Chinese government on internet and Apple continues. If you are living in China and wondering why your VPN apps are not working then here’s the good reason for that. The government of China has taken the help from Apple, Inc. to remove all the apps from the App Store that can be used to evade its Firewall against the censorship.

VPN is the software made by the developers that can mask the IP address of the computer and internet, thereby allowing the users to view anything they want, even the sites that are banned in that region. Such apps an d software have vanished from China’s internet and App Store on the request of Chinese Government.

The VPN company, the Express VPN posted the letter that they received from the Apple, Inc. saying their app has been removed from the App Store. According to the letter, “because it includes content that is illegal in China, we have taken it down.” Not only this, another post from this company on Twitter confirmed the news and agreed that the app has been removed. In addition to that, the Express VPN posted that the removal of the app is, “surprising and unfortunate.” Further, it added, “We’re disappointed in this development, as it represents the most drastic measure the Chinese government has taken to block the use of VPNs to date, and we are troubled to see Apple aiding China’s censorship efforts.”

Well, this is not the first time that Apple has removed apps from App Store on the request of Chinese Government. This removal of the apps from the App Store is a new signal indicating the China is taking full-fledged interest to control the internet. And in response, Apple has made every step to ensure Chinese Government that they stay on Beijing’s good side.

Google Cloud to boosts internet throughput with new congestion-control algorithm

Google announced that TCP BBR, a new congestion-control algorithm that it has used to improve network throughput from google.com and YouTube by about four percent globally (and by more than 14 percent in some countries), is now also available to its Google Cloud Platform users.

The general idea here is to improve on the existing congestion-control algorithms for internet traffic, which have been around since the 1980s and which typically only take packet loss into account (when networking buffers fill up, routers will discard any new packets). These algorithms decide how fast a given device should be sending data into the network to avoid overloading it. When these systems realize that some of the data packets don’t make it to their final destination, they start sending the data more slowly, which ideally reduces the amount of congestion. There are all kinds of algorithms for working out the details of how exactly to do this (and how to speed up again over time), but at their core, they all tend to follow the same patterns.

BBR

BBR, which stands for “Bottleneck Bandwidth and Round-trip propagation time,” takes a different approach. It doesn’t just look at packet loss but also at how fast the network is actually delivering data. “For a given network connection, it uses recent measurements of the network’s delivery rate and round-trip time to build an explicit model that includes both the maximum recent bandwidth available to that connection, and its minimum recent round-trip delay,” Google explains. Using this data, BBR then decides how fast it wants to send its data.

The result of this is an algorithm that can send more data at any given time (without incurring losses), especially on long-haul links. Google says one of its benchmarks showed a 2,700x increase in throughput rate, but that’s obviously an edge case and a synthetic benchmark.

The company first publicly talked about BBR in a paper last year and has since open-sourced the protocol. Google has also contributed it to the Linux kernel TCP stack.

Why is Anti-Virus Alone No Longer Enough For your Device Security?

Bygone are the days when only single anti-virus software was the foolproof security of the device, especially for the window users. The landscape of threats and cyber attacks have changed a lot in the past 10 years and that made every business owner and even home users think about the level of protection they receive.

There are three important reasons why your anti-virus alone is not enough for the security of your device.

#1: You don’t have to Click to Get Hit:

In the past, it was sufficient for you to simply avoid clicking on the suspect links or visiting bad sites. But the case is not the same anymore. This is due to the new malvertising attack that causes a trustworthy and legitimate site to pull malicious content that seeks a way to install in any computer of the visitor, thereby destroying and infecting it.

#2: The responses of Anti-Virus Programs for new Viruses are Too Slow:

According to the new research on the anti-virus response to the new threats and viruses, the traditional AV only stops 30-50 percent of new zero-hour malware when it’s first seen. A few anti-viruses take almost 8 hours to reach the 90 percent of the level, with a majority needing a full 24 hours. That is another reason why your anti-virus software is not at all enough to avoid cyber attacks.

#3: Attackers are everywhere:

Last but not the least, the exploits being everywhere is the major concern that makes it obvious that only a single anti-virus software is not enough for your device. So before trusting any email provider or the sender, make sure that your device is less prone to get attacks.

In order to avoid these harmful attacks, you need to make yourself a smaller target. Run a modern system and keep it updated to keep you on the safe side. It’s a new world out there.  The layered approach to security, along with good software maintenance practices, can help you stay safe.

It’s just like a quiz and you have to answer the questions honestly. Once, you have finished a series of “YES” or “NO” questions, a proposed value of your device would be shown that can be very useful in determining the worth of your phone.

#2: Phone Trading Programs:

There are also the device trading programs powered by some online device recycling companies that can trade-in the device for cash, based on its condition and your answers. If you choose to trade-in and donate, you will receive a prepaid shipping package to mail the device back in. Your device would be evaluated and then, you will receive a wireless gift to your account.

#3: Try the Local Market:

There are a number of shops in phone markets that buy old phones to sell them at cheaper rates. You can visit those shops as well to get to know the price of your phone.
