Most people know that world hunger is a pulping edition -- but what you may not know is that food waste is evenly concerning.

This doesn"t seem to make sense: How is it that so many go hungry if there"s so much usable nutrient heading toward landfills? If you think the question of food waste is counterintuitive, you"re not alone. The UN"s Sustainable Development Goals outline a series of objectives to tackle global problems including hunger and food waste , among others.

There are a number of inventors who recognize that food waste is an inappropriate trouble in our modern world -- and they"re doing their proportion to introduce the UN"s SDGs like zero hunger, sustainable agriculture practices, and sustainable consumption and production to fruition. Below are five individuals who are making a serious impact on all levels of the food waste order -- from raising and agriculture to supermarkets and retail, the whole way down to the individual consumer.

Tristram Stuart, founder of Feedback

When Tristram Stuart was just a girl, he find a number of problems that many of us are most likely celebrated at one point or another: Supermarkets, restaurants, bakeries, and grocers throwing away bins full of perfectly usable food.

"We were wasting food at every association in the entire series, " Stuart says in a video detailing his philosophy behind Feedback, the company he started in 2009 to address the problem of food waste. Feedback plans action and awareness campaigns( as well as happenings) that target food waste from -- literally -- the ground up. From working with governments and international institutions to acquainting businesses and mobilizing grassroots organizations and the public, the group aims to be a catalyst for changing world-wide attitudes about food waste.

Stuart has dedicated his busines to the questions; while researching for his diary Trash: Discovering the Global Food Scandal , he realise how many of the food waste editions facing supermarkets are tied up in buying policies and cosmetic touchstones -- and sometimes, even stemming from obscure bureaucratic regulations. He founded Feedback to fight these policies on a systemic level.

Feedback"s firstly awareness contest took place in London"s Trafalgar Square in December 2009 and fed 5,000 beings -- and the resulting media coverage was a catalyst for the UK government to change some of the current policy about food waste. Today, Feedback has hosted same happens in 45 municipals, and has had substantial global wallop on the way the world views waste.

Nnaemeka Ikegwuonuu, founder of ColdHubs

Mitigating post-harvest loss for farmers in developing nations . strong > em>

In Nigeria, Kenya, and Zimbabwe, more than 35 million tons of fruits and veggies are grew each year. Yet, according to startup ColdHubs, 45% of this menu spoils due to inadequate storage techniques. And beyond this region "of the worlds", post-harvest losses of fresh fruits and vegetables alter 470 million farmers and retailers in other developing nations. The bottom line: Small farmers may lose as much as 25% of their annual income due to spoilage.

Enter Nnaemeka Ikegwuonuu, a Nigerian agriculturist. His startup is a social crusade that produces modular, walk-in freezing chambers that extend the rack life of perishable meat -- and not just by hours or periods, but by weeks. The chambers are fueled by solar panel and high-capacity batteries, meeting them an eco-conscious answer for portable refrigeration.

The company designings, assembles, sets, and committees these rooms, which farmers acquire on a pay-as-you-store due model. Ikegwuonuu has long-term aims for ColdHubs: He plans to have 1,000 legions operating in the next five years.

Tessa Cook, founder of OLIO

Addressing food waste on "consumers interests" height . strong > em>

While food waste on a mass proportion often occurs on the front line of consumerism( arranges like grocery store and supermarkets) or on an agricultural level, in the developed countries, almost half of all food waste takes residence in their own homes. Entrepreneur Tessa Cook wanted to do something to cut down the PS1 3 billion usefulnes of food that the UK collectively sheds out each year.

"It"s crazy that our solution to too much good menu is to throw it away, and that there"s been no innovation since the rubbish bin, " says Cook.

To combat this issue, Cook and co-founder Saasha Celestial-One started OLIO, a free app that are linked neighbors with neighbourhood patronizes and cafes so that surplus menu is also possible repurposed. The app( available for both Android and iPhone) is simple to use: Just click a photograph of parts "youre trying to" jettison, and neighbours receive alertings and can request whatever piques their interest. Pickup is ordered via private message.

There are numerous exert examples for the app, Cook explains: Like when families go on a food, move home, leave for trip, over-cater a party, or receive unwanted endowments.( Finally, something to do with all those festivity result patties .)

"Demand for surplus menu is improbably high, with 40% of indices requested in less than an hour, and 86% of schedules requested in less than 24 hours, " Cook says. The app, which launched in the UK in January 2016 and globally in October 2016, has accrued more than 225,000 customers to date.

"So countless go hungry and the environmental outcomes are nothing short of destroying, " says Cook. "OLIO aims to start food sharing a viable alternative to the bin, and to do so in a way that is simple, convenient, and fun."

Amanda Weeks, cofounder of Industrial/ Organic

Putting food waste to good consume . strong > em>

So, what about food waste that"s already on its way to the landfill? Amanda Weeks is an entrepreneur tackling the problem from another tilt: Using consume as a resource.

Industrial/ Organic, Weeks" Brooklyn-based startup undertaking food recycling in urban areas, procures ways to articulated the liquid, power, and nutrients of food waste to production. Through a multi-step recovery process( technically worded "anaerobic fermentation" ), the company plans to up-cycle waste into bio-based commodities including household cleaners, sweetness, and organic fertilizer. It goes beyond composting; the process produces no methane, and produces fewer emissions and odors than other solutions.

"Our approach shuts several crucial loops-the-loops necessary to support public health, environmental resilience, and economic rise, " shows the Industrial/ Organic website. "We reclaim the resources spent on nutrient that is wasted, and reuse them to create a more sustained structure for future generations."

Keiran Whitaker, founder of Entocycle

Coming full circle: Up-cycling squander for agricultural purposes . strong > em>

Keiran Olivares Whitaker"s company, Entocycle, takes another inventive approaching to food waste recycling -- controlling the strength of nature.

"We are squandering sort to fight on two fronts: Undertaking both the food waste we procreate, and the unsustainability of the protein raising manufacture, " shows Whitaker.

Entocycle converts food waste into sustainable, protein-based feed for the agriculture industry -- all exploiting the supremacy of bugs. The corporation is developing the first fully automated "smart factory" that produces insect protein meal.

"Insects are nature"s recyclers, and a natural food for animals, " Whitaker interprets. Entocycle"s darlings are black soldier tent-flies, which transform nutrient rubbish -- circumstances like spent beer particles, potato peelings, and fruit and vegetable squander -- into workable animal feed pellets. The organization employs horizontal farming, so it"s capable of producing large volumes of commodity in very small rooms. The whole up-cycling process takes less than a week.

Entocycle"s facility is currently up and running in the heart of London. In collaboration with the Good Kitchen accelerator curriculum, Entocycle aims to revolutionize the $150 billion animal feed industry, eventually supplanting environmentally pernicious answers like fish and soy meal.
