Made by Apple, GymKit is certainly one of their most interesting releases so far. It, as the name suggests, allows Apple Watch users to connect to various bits of kit at the gym. But what does it do, how does it work, and what kit will it work with?
What is GymKit?
This tech from Apple allows a user to connect their Apple Watch with a GymKit enabled cardio equipment. This includes treadmills, ellipticals, indoor bikes, or stair steppers. When these two devices are connected, the Watch can give much more accurate information by constantly communicating with the gym equipment.
How does GymKit work?
As with most Apple products, GymKit is very easy to set up. It follows up on the basis of Apple Pay. All you have to do is walk up to a GymKit enabled equipment and connect it by tapping on to the NFC terminal. Once they have "tapped in" data can securely flow between the two devices. And yes, it works just as described. The watch buzzes to let you know you"ve paired the two devices together. from there until you finish your work out you are synced to the machine.
The gym equipment will draw information like your age, height, weight, and heart rate. From the gym equipment, the Apple Watch gets a host of information like incline, pace, RPM on the bike or stairs climbed. Some of this information has not been obtainable by the Watch until now. Furthermore, data such as heart rate, calories burned, distance, speed and incline are sent wirelessly between devices.
A major advantage is that all the information will be displayed on the large screen of the gym equipment. You no longer have to keep checking out your watch to get the information. Equipment does not save your device so once you disconnect, it forgets your device. This is great news for anyone worrying about privacy.
